Free things

One of the things I learned years ago is that language has power. Words have mean whether it is written or spoken they have the ability to convey meaning to an audience. Sometimes the meaning of the word can get lost.

Recently I got a receipt and on the back of it in big letters was a message that said get a free sandwich. Upon further reading it told me I had to call and give feedback on my purchase and I had to buy a drink and a side to get the sandwich.

Now when you look the word free it means without restrictions. Following that logic the use of the word free is not correct. There were restrictions to the sandwich. First I had to give feedback and secondly, I had to purchase additional items. It would have more accurate to say receive a sandwich at no cost after meeting the conditions listed. I sometimes want to challenge the person at the counter with the concept but not sure they would get.
